I was lucky enough to get a copy of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame / The Hunchback Of Notre Dame II (Blu-ray + DVD) for a review. Hunchback has always been a favorite of mine – I just love the message behind it.

In 15th century Paris, Clopin the puppeteer tells the story of Quasimodo, the misshapen gentle-souled bell ringer of Notre Dame, who was nearly killed as a baby by Claude Frollo, the Minister of Justice. But Frollo was forced by the Archdeacon of Notre Dame to raise Quasimodo as his own. Now a young man, Quasimodo is hidden from the world by Frollo in the belltower of the cathedral. But during the Festival of Fools, Quasimodo, cheered on by his gargoyle friends Victor, Hugo, and Laverne, decides to take part in the festivities, where he meets the lively gypsy girl Esmeralda and the handsome soldier Phoebus. The three of them find themselves ranged against Frollo’s cruelty and his attempts to destroy the home of the gypsies, the Court of Miracles. And Quasimodo must desperately defend both Esmeralda and the very cathedral of Notre Dame.

Hunchback of Notre Dame is a great film to teach my children to look past the physicality of someone to see who they really truly are, just like Esmeralda does with Quasi AND Quasi does with Esmeralda. She sees him as a kind man instead of the monster he is used to being called and Esmeralda is not the lowlife thief con-artist that gypsies in general are through to be. They work together to defend Esmeralda’s home along with Quasi’s home, the Notre Dame Catherdral.

hunch4We all come across people whom we judge before we even meet, which is not the right thing to do. The Hunchback of Norte Dame reminds us that we can stop and think about this and maybe even find a great friend.

In Hunchback 2, Esmeralda, Quasi, Phoebus, and the beloved gargoyles are back!

Now that Frollo is gone, Quasimodo rings the bell with the help of his new friend and Esmeralda’s and Phoebus’ little son, Zephyr. But when Quasi stops by a traveling circus owned by evil magician Sarousch, he falls for Madellaine, Sarouch’s assistant. But greedy Sarousch forces Madellaine to help him steal the Cathedral’s most famous bell.

The cast includes:hunch3

  • Jason Alexander a Hugo
  • Tom Hulce as Quasimodo
  • Demi Moore as Esmeralda
  • Kaven Kline as Phoebus
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt as Madellaine
  • and many more!

Bonus features include:

The Making of Hunchback of Norte Dame, some GREAT audio commentary by producer Don Hahn and directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and A Gargoyle’s Life Featurette!

I felt like this was a really inspiring set of films – my children love Disney and Hunchback of Notre Dame is no exception. With the grand sweeping music, the action, and the overall message, this is sure to become a classic in my home.
