Puzzles with Grandma…
It’s the little things that trigger memories. Today I had one of those triggers. It all started with a puzzle.
When I was little we’d visit my grandma a lot. Her small house was nestled in the heart of Orange County, CA and she was always there with open arms, welcoming us whenever we visited. One of my favorite things to do with my grandma was putting together jigsaw puzzles. I remember sitting at her dining room table with her while we silently found pieces that fit in this puzzle that had bright tropical fish against a brilliant blue background. Round because grandma liked a challenge and also wanted to keep my six-year-old mind stimulated. The satisfying *click* when a piece fit perfectly meant it deserved a little finger pat too. My grandma did this all of the time.
I realized today while working on a puzzle that I was doing the exact same thing. On a whim I bought a 1000 piece puzzle of a covered bridge in a snowy forest. I wished I could have found the round tropical fish puzzle that I remember so fondly, but I still had that same *click* and pat nonetheless.
It’s been almost 8 years since my grandma passed, but I have a very strong feeling she is with me every single day.
